Istanbul não se fotografa de passagem. É preciso tempo para perceber como funciona, como as camadas se sobrepõem. Um vendedor de chá cruza uma rua enquanto o chamamento para a oração ecoa entre os prédios. Um gato dorme no parapeito de uma mesquita do século XVI. Dois miúdos jogam à bola no pátio ao lado. Tudo isto acontece ao mesmo tempo, no mesmo quarteirão.Istanbul is not photographed in passing. Time is needed to understand how it works, how the layers overlap. A tea seller crosses a street while the call to prayer echoes between the buildings. A cat sleeps on the parapet of a sixteenth-century mosque. Two kids play football in the courtyard next door. All of this happens at the same time, in the same block.

Vamos trabalhar durante quatro dias nos bairros onde a vida acontece sem encenação. Balat, com as fachadas coloridas e as comunidades históricas. Kadıköy, do lado asiático, com os mercados e a vida de rua. Fatih, onde a religiosidade se mistura com o comércio de todos os dias. E os grandes bazares, onde a luz filtra por entre tapetes e especiarias.We will work for four days in the neighbourhoods where life happens without staging. Balat, with its colourful facades and historic communities. Kadıköy, on the Asian side, with its markets and street life. Fatih, where religiosity mixes with everyday commerce. And the grand bazaars, where light filters through carpets and spices.

Não estamos aqui para coleccionar imagens bonitas. Estamos aqui para aprender a construir uma narrativa visual num contexto culturalmente complexo. Perceber como é que gestos, luz e enquadramento funcionam em conjunto para contar algo que vá além do óbvio.We are not here to collect beautiful images. We are here to learn how to build a visual narrative in a culturally complex context. To understand how gestures, light and framing work together to tell something that goes beyond the obvious.

Madrugada no Grande Bazar antes da abertura ao público. Luz natural a entrar pelos tectos. Depois, Fé: mesquitas, rotinas religiosas, o mercado de rua de quarta-feira. O trabalho aqui é sobre a sobreposição entre o sagrado e o quotidiano.Morning in the Great Bazar before opening to the public. Natural light to enter through the ceilings. Travessia de ferry para o lado asiático. O mercado de Kadıköy, as ruas laterais, os bares, a vida nocturna. A energia é completamente diferente da cidade europeia.
